How To Choose A Cordless Vacuum
Cordless vacuums are fast become the most popular choice for homeowners. They are much more practical to use compared to other devices. The lightweight designs make them mobile enough for anyone to zoom around with. Also, the major reason being how much freedom you have. There is no mains cable to watch out for any more! Plus, these are fairly cheap in comparison.
1. Battery Life
The battery life is very important when deciding which one to buy. A long-lasting vac will run for about 45 minutes. Cordless’ with a short life, will run for around 15 minutes. If you know vacuuming your home cannot be done within that time frame, then you may want an upright or a cylinder vacuum.
2. Suction Power
The main duty of a vacuum is to suck up dirt. So really, the suction is vital. But, there are many other factors. The more powerful models tend to be more expensive, and if you have pets you’ll likely need to buy one like the Dyson V8 Animal.
However, if you only need a light clean every so often, then a cheaper model will be perfect.
Some brands are well known for creating fantastic products. Dyson, for example, always make quality vacuums. So do Shark. Buying a well-known branded product has its benefits. 1. You know what you’re getting. 2. The warranty is usually 2 years.
On the other hand, some vacuums on this post are not from the most recognisable brands, such as the Diek. But, our research of their one told us it needed to be on here, plus you get a fantastic warranty.
Good vacuums have good features. A handy feature that cordless models possess is the 2-in-1 ability. Although they are light and easy to manoeuvre, cleaning places like the stairs can still be an issue. The 2-in-1 feature means you can transform your vac into a handheld device very quickly, so you can clean the hard-to-get areas with ease.

No one want’s to pay over the top for anything. Which, is why we have factored in the price to our reviews. All our models on here are of good value, for what you’re buying. But, in general, on the market, you will see some rubbish ones costing £350+, where you could get the same quality for £300 less.
Best Cordless Vacuums UK
#1 Dyson V8 ANIMAL
If you’re in the market for a super powerful cordless stick vacuum that is excellent for pet hairs, then this Dyson V8 Animal is just what you need.
The reason I say this is because it has fantastic cleaning ability across all floor types when it comes to pet hairs and other dirt.
More importantly, the suction power and motorised brush allow it to dislodge and remove hairs that have fallen deep into your carpets grain. Just as good as the more powerful upright vacuum cleaners.
It’s fair to say the V8 Animal is the best cordless vacuum on the UK market. In fact its a league above the others.
What makes it more appealing, is the filtration system. It’s designed to remove allergens and bad particles for the air, that could cause you irritation if you suffer for allergies like hayfever. So, the exhausted air from this one is much cleaner and fresher for you to breath.
Ejecting dirt from some vacuums can be a rather messy chore, and fairly unhygienic. However, this has a hygiene friendly dust container, with a 0.54L capacity. With one use of a button, you can empty the compacted contents, into a bin really easily. And without causing a bad mess for you to clean afterwards.
The reason we love this the most though is due to the long battery life it has. Moving away from the standard lithium-ion batteries you see in the majority of cordless vacuums. The Dyson V8 Animal has a newly built Nickel Cobalt Aluminium battery which gives you, the user, up to 40 minutes of cleaning time. However, if you attach the motorised floor tool, you will only get 25 minutes.
The product itself is easy to use and manoeuvre, as it only weighs 2kg.
- From a leading vacuum brand
- Very well designed and easy to use
- Has different power levels (although may shorten the battery life)
- Ideal for pet owners
- Good if you suffer from allergies
- Bagless, with an easy-empty bin
- Comes with all the additional tools you will need
- 4-5 hours charging time
- Powerful suction and great on carpets
- Docking station for charging
- Great for cleaning the stairs
- Expensive – But worth the investment
- Nowhere to store the other attachments on the vacuum its self
Is the Dyson V8 Animal Good For Hardwood Floors? Yes, it is excellent across all surface types.
How Long Should a Dyson V8 Battery Last? In terms of life span, Dyson’s battery should live for 4-5 years. A new replacement will cost around £50.
This is by far the only cordless vacuum that can compare to a good upright model. Its power and quality on all surfaces are really what makes it stand out.
Pet owners, the V8 animal is the perfect vac for your home. Once you buy this you will be incredibly surprised by its qualities. The battery life is excellent also, so you will not have to keep charging and waiting everytime you run through your home with it.
In our humble opinion, it is the best cordless vacuum. Although quite expensive, but if you’re after the best, then the price shouldn’t be an issue.
#2 BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster
The big selling point about this Black and Decker dustbuster is the technology it boasts compared to others. It is highly regarded as one of the best cordless vacuums, although it’s not the most popular device with consumers. The reason being is it’s not marketed as much as others. Probably because B&D spend time on their highly successful power tools.
Again, the technology it has is really incredible. It’s the only model that has ‘Smart tech’ which is really handy if you have multiple floor types in your home. The main purpose of it is to automatically adjust the suction power to a specific surface. This will save your battery and make it easier to clean as you will not have to manually change it. The smart tech also ensures you will get the best results in your home.
Other benefits of ‘Smart Tech’.
- Automatically detects when the filter needs changing and alerts you.
- Displays the remaining battery life
It is extremely lightweight, and easy to use for many. Especially, for elder people. You can whizz around your home very quickly and tackle the hard to get areas by utilising the multi-functional feature it has. The vac transforms into a handheld vac so you can clean your stairs, skirting and even your car, without missing a spot. The only real downside, but it is expected, the handheld feature does not have as good suction.
The great thing is, the nozzle is still quite long so you will not be bending down to its level, which can be quite uncomfortable and a huge downside to most handheld vacuums.
As you can see there is a lot to love. But, mostly this cordless is immense value for what you get. Although it’s not the cheapest on the list.
- Amazing technology which helps you with everyday tasks
- Has a powered bar that gets into your carpets to dislodge and remove stuck dirt
- A power boost option is available for more stubborn bits of mess
- Bagless, easy to clean, and empty the clear dust bin
- Washable dust bin, and filter, meaning you’ll rarely have to get a replacement
- Lightweight and easy to use for all people
- Known to have charging issues
- Not good for thick carpets
- Small dust bowl
How long does a full battery last? 20 minutes. Although, this depends if you’re using the boost mode, which will reduce that time to 15mins.
Does it have a warranty and for how long? Yes, it does, with Black and Decker, for two years.
Is it good for picking up pet hair? Yes and no. If you have a thick-haired dog that malts often, then I’d suggest the Dyson V8 Animal. But if you own cats etc, this will be able to handle it.
The Black and Decker dustbuster is absolutely worth the money you pay. There are other models that cost more but you get a lot less quality. With this one, the technology really takes over for you, to make cleaning as less of a chore as possible. You will find yourself enjoying using it around your home, and that is quite rare for a cleaning tool. But, there are some downsides, such as the common battery issues. But, the warranty protects you anyway, so there is not much to worry about, other than the hassle.
However, I still suggest you take a look at the reviews from others online. Use the link below and you can see, what buyers have recently said about it.
#3 Gtech AirRam MK2
Without a doubt, one of the most popular cordless vacuums in the UK is the Gtech AirRam MK2. The reasons why are understandable once you get your hands on and start using it.
The main factor is, that it makes cleaning easy and enjoyable. On top of that, the Gtech is built with incredible technology added in. Things like the LED light across the full width of the head, illuminates all dark spots like under the sofa, so no dust or dirt can escape your eyes.
Also, because this is not a 2in1 detachable model, it does not mean you cannot get to the difficult areas of your home, like in the corners. The Gtech Rams specially designed full-length brush bar, makes light work of skirting boards and more, leaving absolutely nowhere for dirt to hide.
Talking of the powered brush head, the Gtech AirRam MK2 features the unique AirLOC system*. With little effort, the vacuum will pick up small and large pieces of debris from any floor type. When you pull in back the bar will lock, ensuring any leftover particles find their way into the bin. What’s more, the brush bar is amazing at dislodging and removing buried pet hair. So, pet owners this is a fantastic cordless vacuum and it will be a huge asset to your home.
To love it, even more, the battery is absolutely fantastic. This vacuum is powered by a 22V lithium-ion battery. It has a full running time of 40 minutes, and more impressively a full charge only takes 4 hours. A handy feature for you is also the LED display that signals how much battery life is left, and will notify you when to recharge.
- Easy to manoeuver as it only weights 3.5kg
- Because its compact, storing it away is very easy
- Removable battery pack
- Amazing suction power
- The bin is easy to empty
- Loud motor
- Does not come with accessories
Is the filter easy to clean? Yes, although some find it difficult. However, it’s much easier than the older version.
Can you remove the brush easily? It is simple and straightforward to remove the brush for maintenance.
How long does the battery last? The run time is a good 40 minutes. Charging from flat to full is 4-hours.
For long term purposes, the battery will last a good 5-years.
Although there is a distinct lack of accessories with it. We still believe this to be one of the best cordless vacuums on the market. In comparison with others, it excels in nearly all departments. And unlike others, it is ideal for all types of homes, all types of floors, and even pet owners. Due to its quality suction power. Having said that, it can be a little noisy, however, most types of vacuums are. We definitely recommend this as the best buy.
#4 Shark IF200UK Cordless Vacuum
The great thing about choosing a Shark vacuum, no matter what type, you can be guaranteed a quality product. The IF200Uk cordless is no exception. It is a very popular model, which is for good reasons. Firstly, it boasts their supreme DuoClean technology in the head. It has two motored brushes which are work individually across different floor types, and that is very handy when switching surfaces.
Getting to tricky areas is no issue for this Shark, or you when you buy it. The design has made it very versatile and flexible for all places. It will actually bend itself, (Flex ology) to get under sofas and other low-lying furniture, making sure every part of your floor is vacuumed. What’s more, it comes with an extended reach wand, for the ceilings and walls. Also, has these incredibly handy LED lights which illuminate hidden dust in dark corners.
For absolute versatility, the Shark IF200UK can easily switch from a cordless, stick vacuum into a handheld device very quickly. This gives you greater freedom to use it as and where you please. It’s great if you want to clean your car, or behind tv units or tables because it gives you greater control.
It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. This can be removed from the vacuum so you can put it on charge anywhere you want. It only takes 3.5hours for a full battery which is pretty standard for cordless vacs and has a run time of 22 minutes. That gives you enough time to whizz around and clean your home.
As you can see, there is so much to like about the Shark IF200UK. Here are some pros and cons of buying it.
- Weights 4KG which is considered lightweight
- Really easy to store in tight places
- Comes with additional tools to make your life easier
- Turns into a handheld vacuum
- Fair size capacity for a cordless model
- Washable filters
- Settings panel allows you to choose what floor type you are on for best results
- Perfect for small homes
- Really good for tricky areas
- Could be better with pets hairs. Although pet owners can buy the other version for much more
- Suction lacks a little
To summarise, it is a fantastic cordless vacuum. The Shark IF200UK is, in our opinion, worth the money you will pay for it. It’s really easy to use, and it’s lightweight, which makes it perfect for the elderly. The only downfall is the suction power. It does lack a little oomph, but with the attachments and settings panel, you can easily adjust it to pick up all pieces of dirt.
#5 Bosch BCH51830GB Cordless Vac
Bosch is a company, that is very popular for producing excellent appliances and tools for many environments. The BCH51830GB cordless vacuum cleaner is no exception to this.
It’s lightweight and very comfortable to use. The vac only weighs 3kg and has a 30-minute running time on a full battery. This means you will get around 10 minutes more than the majority of battery powered vacuums on the market. What’s cool about this, is in only 3 hours the battery charges 80% – Which is very quick and is ideal for using it in short spates. However, a full charge will take around 6 hours.
There are three different power levels available with the Bosch, including a turbo mode. However, using higher modes will reduce the battery life quicker. But, the options are handy, if you need it for a specific task like picking up your pet’s hair from thick carpets.
To really compliment the turbo mode, this has a rolling bar brush in its head. What that does is sinks into the deep piles of your carpets to remove dirt and hairs that are embedded. Therefore, you can be really sure your carpets will be looking extra clean after using it. And that’s what we all want from a vacuum right?
What’s more, the Bosch is effective over different surface types. Although, unlike the Black and Decker Dustbuster, you will have to change to power levels manually. It is very easy to do though, and for hard floors, it’s recommended you use the basic level.
It is a bagless vacuum, and the capacity of the dust container is 0.9L. Having that much capacity for a cordless vac is very nice since you won’t have to spend half your vacuum time emptying the bin.
- Easy to use, store and clean due to its user-friendly design
- Has a powerful suction strength
- Good for pet hairs and stubborn dirt
- Works well on both carpet and hard surfaces
- Generous dust capacity
- High-performance motor for lasting results
- Short battery charging time
- Long lasting run time
- No allergen filters
- Hard to use on upholstery and in difficult places
- Difficult to switch from the main unit to nozzle
I have a dog, is it good at picking up the hairs? Yes, it is very good. Although it may struggle if you have a dog with really thick hair.
Does it clean right to the edges? Yes, this is excellent at picking up dirt for skirtings etc.
Is it easy to empty? Yes, only two clips hold the container in, then you just have to empty it over a rubbish bag.
Although this is the first cordless vacuum from Bosch, they have lived up to their name of creating excellent tools for our homes. It does a fantastic job of cleaning all floor types and it has some cool additional attachments for upholstery and other places. You get a generous run time with it, which should be plenty for you to clean your home. If you have pets then picking the right vacuum is a hard task, but this one is a really good choice. Although it doesn’t have a ton of technology, and it is pretty basic, the price is good for the quality. It’s definitely not the cheapest, but more in the mid-range if you’re on a budget.
#6 Hoover Freedom 2in1
The Hoover company have specialised in designing and creating the best domestic vacuums for many decades. The Hoover Freedom 2in1 cordless vacuum is in our opinion the best on the market, for your money. Many other expensive cordless vacuums are available but, this affordable cleaner really does stand up against the others in terms of quality.
It has multifunctional abilities as it can detach from the stick and be used as a handheld device. Due to the rotating bar brush, it can remove deep-rooted particles of dust, hairs and other trapped dirt very easily. Making sure your floors will be extra clean. And because it is a 2in1, once you turn it into a hand-held hoover, you can use it to clean your car, and some difficult areas of your home, like cupboards etc.
The bin capacity is only 0.7L which for a flat/apartment is very good. If you own a house you will want to check out another model. (choose another model). But, because it is a bagless vacuum, emptying the bin is a very simple task. A single button will release all the contents, in a neat way. Therefore you will not have rubbish flying everywhere!
What we love most about this model, is the continuous button feature. With many cordless vacuums, you will need to pull a trigger. That can become painful for your hands and in some cases, people suffer from cramp. But with the Hoover Freedom 2in1, you can put it into continuous mode using a lever, and it will keep going without you ever having to pull the trigger. What’s more, a 22V lithium battery pack gives you 25 minutes non-stop vacuuming time, on a full charge. Charging it to full from a flat battery will take around 6 hours.
- Wall mounted charging station comes with it
- Crevice tool and other handy attachments
- Easy to store away. neatly
- Can be used on all floors Lightweight 2.2kg
- Good Value
- Not ideal for pet owners
- Not ideal for medium to large homes
As a whole, it is a fantastic cordless vacuum. It does exactly what you would require from it. Again, people with small homes or flats will benefit more, due to the size, features and quality. It has fantastic suction power, and along with the rotating brush, you can sure all your floor types will be squeaky clean. And with the detachable head, the difficult areas of your home are now manageable via a vacuum cleaner.
#7 Morphy Richards Supervac
If you’re looking for a cheap, lightweight cordless vac from one of the leading brands then I suggest you take a look at the Morphy Richards Supervac.
Its 2in1 feature means you have the freedom from using an upright vacuum and also a handheld vacuum. The 2in1 is a really handy feature. If you wish to use the vacuum for cleaning your car, upholstery or other areas they prove to be tricky, you will benefit highly from it.
The Supervac boasts a really powerful 18v battery, therefore it can run for 35 minutes on a full charge. Also, from flat to full battery, charging only takes five and a half hours. Compared to others, the charging the battery is significantly quicker. The suction power is good. However, not the best. If you want a more powerful cordless vacuum, you should check out the G-tech AirRam MK2 (listed above). But, it’s not terrible at all.
The homes that will really feel the rewards of the Supervac are small flats and small houses. If pets are present, it will have troubles with the hairs. But for everyday cleaning, dusting and vacuuming, it is a really good asset. Plus, you can pick it up for a cheap price.
Storage is very easy, due to the forward-thinking design, by Morphy Richards. The handle collapses allowing you to put it away into a small cupboard or storage area. What I love most about it, is how the design has made using it very easy for you.
With Morphy Richards products, you are getting quality. They have made this Vac very easy to manoeuvre with the incredible swivel technology they have added. What’s more, it only weighs 3.94kg, making it one of the lightest cordless vacuums on the market.
- Lightweight and easy to use
- 2in1 – Upright and Handheld Vacuum
- Quick charging time
- Powerful battery
- Suction power could be better
- Not ideal for normal sized homes
Clearly, there is a lot to like, and as stated some bad points. However, it’s quality overall is good and worth the low price to buy it. A vacuum like this will be ideal for a 1 or 2 person household, where cleaning is not required daily. If you do meet our recommend criteria for Morphy Richards Supervac, and you decide it’s for you we can assure you will be getting a quality model. There are many reviews online, from buyers, and current owners. In fact on Amazon, over 1000 people have let their feeling known. We recommend you head on over and check them out for yourself with the link below.
#8 AEG CX7-2-45AN Animal
If you have pets at home, and you’re looking for a good and reliable vacuum that can handle their hairs, then you probably will want to check out this AEG CX7-2-45AN Animal. It has been made with cutting edge features, to make your housework a little easier. Plus, you don’t need deep pockets to buy it.
The first feature which will mainly benefit pet owners is the powerful pet turbo nozzle. It attaches to the head of the vacuum, and it gets deep into your carpets fibres to remove any stubborn hairs. As you can see, it is more of an upright design, but because it’s a 2-1in model. You can convert this into a handheld vacuum. What’s more, you can put the pet nozzle on the hand device so you can clean your stairs, and even your car very easily.
Across all surface types, the AEG is good. There are two power settings you can choose from.
- For carpets – The most powerful setting and this will consume more battery life.
- For hard floors, like vinyl’s, wood, and tiles. It is less powerful, but it’s still really effective.
Another cool feature, which is really handy to have, is the dust spotting LED lights. The CX7’s nozzle has built-in lights to illuminate any untouched dust that may be hiding under tables, sofas or other areas. With this, you will find, no place in your home goes untouched, or unnoticed.
Finally, a problem most vacuums face is the brush roll getting tangled up. This has Brushroll Clean Technology which has been created to remove hair and fibres entangled in the brush on its own. Then, sucking it into the dust cup. If you’ve ever had that problem before, you will know this can save you time.
- The 2-in-1 gives you great versatility to use this as an upright and handheld vacuum.
- Good for pet owners
- Lightweight model and easy to use as it’s only 2.4KG
- Comes with additional accessories
- Fairly cheap
- LED headlights to expose dark areas
- 40 minutes of running time
- Different power levels for specific surface types
- Feels a bit cheap
- Poor customer service from Manufacturer
- Not as powerful as some will require
This is a really good vacuum. Not the best, but if you’re wanting something similar to an upright but a lot cheaper then this is a good alternative.
The best point about the CX7 is you can transform it into a handheld, which becomes really handy (excuse the pun) when you want to clean upholstery, stairs or even a car. The battery life is very good, 45 minutes of run time is well above the average cordless vacuum. But mostly, the reviews online from other buyers have been very positive. Not many people have bad things to say about it. If you follow the link below, you can check out some for yourself.
#9 Deik Vacuum Cleaner
This Deik cordless vacuum cleaner, is one of the most highly rated models, in terms of reviews online. Although Diek is not the most popular brand, this vacuum seems to be loved. It’s clear to see why though when you take a closer look.
The main benefit of this is it’s a 2-in-1, meaning you can turn it into a handheld vacuum. That can be very helpful for you if you have stairs, a car, or other places that are hard to get for a stick design. Also, what’s really amazing, is the Diek does not lose as much suction power as other 2-in-1s when it has been converted.
The reason for its great suction comes from the high-efficiency motor and electric rolling brushes, that is designed for carpets. The purpose of the brushes is to get deep into the fibres of your carpets to remove the most stubborn bits of dirt and even pet hairs. Now, while most vacuums posses these brushes, the Ev-660’s perform to a high level. What’s more, and something that will really help you is it can tell what surface you are using it on. So, when you are cleaning carpet, indicator lights will guide you to put it on the right settings for best results.
Where vacuums exhaust air back into your home, it is almost essential the device has a good filtration system. This one does. In fact, it has three systems to prevent bad particles and allergens from polluting the air in your home. Therefore if you suffer from issues like hayfever, the Diek vacuum will be really beneficial for your health.
The best part about this is the price. Comparing qualities, to top models, this is at least 1/3 of their prices.
- Fantastic across all floor types – Has two power modes for carpets and hard floor
- Charges really quickly
- Has a 22V lithium-ion battery
- Good running time
- Very good value
- 2-year manufacturer warranty
- An awesome filtration system for allergies
- Great suction power and good with pet hairs
- Versatile and can be turned into a handheld model
- Easy to use a manoeuvre
- Compact and easy to store
- Nice and clean dust container which is easy to empty
- Only good for small homes
- Feels a bit cheap
- Could be more lightweight
How Long Does It Take To Charge? Charging is fairly quick. From flat to full takes around 4-5 hours.
Does The Battery Last Long? Yes. Once fully charged, you will get 25-35 minutes, depending on the power mode you use it on.
What’s The Dust Container Capacity? 0.5L – Which is fairly small.
For a great price (less than £90) you get a fantastic vacuum cleaner. The EV-660 has all the hallmarks that a high priced cordless vac has. The suction power is awesome and you will love using it on your carpets, and hard floors. It picks up nearly everything its way, and it even has LED headlights which lights-up dusty areas that you may have missed. It is a great device. However, due to its small capacity, if you have a normal/medium size home, then you will not get along with this. You will end up spending more time emptying the bin, than its worth. So the Diek is only recommended if you have a small house, and you don’t have heavy duty cleaning to do.
#10 Russell Hobbs RHSV1601
The reason you want a cordless vacuum is that it offers you a great amount of freedom compared to others. Also, they are powerful, reliable and easy to store away, because of how compact they are.
Also, one of the biggest reasons, is they are generally a lot cheaper. This Russell Hobbs vac is exactly that, cheap in price. However, not so much in quality. The bagless design makes it very easy for you to empty, and clean when needed to. Plus, you will never have to spend so much money on replacing the bag. Emptying it out is simple, as it easily clips off, and has a button to deposit the waste away, without causing you a massive mess.
This vac is suitable for all floor types. So, if in your home you have carpets and hard floor surfaces, then you will be able to go between each one without facing a drop in suction quality.
The suction is really good due to the power given to it by the battery. The 16V power pack gives you 15 minutes of cleaning time and only takes 3 hours to charge. Although 15 minutes is not a long time in general, if you live on your own in a small place, then this will be sufficient for you, so long as your not very messy. On the other hand, three hours from a flat to full battery is quite impressive. Therefore, if you did need it for a big job, you won’t waste a lot of time waiting around.
By far, the most impressive feature this boasts is the 2-in-1 ability. Although it is cordless, the design is that of an upright. But, you can utilise the feature and turn it into a hand vacuum.
- Suitable for all floor types
- Has good suction power
- Cheap price tag
- Compact and easy to store
- Short charging time
- Ideal for single households
- Poor dust filters
- Doesn’t have a long run time
- Pretty basic
- Not great on stubborn bits of dirt and hairs
To be honest, this does not really boast a wow factor. There are better models on the market, albeit a tad more expensive. But, you pay for what you get. As I said, this is good for single households, or small places, that do not need a lot of maintenance. It’s great for giving things a once over, but if you need more than that I suggest choosing the top pick on this list.
However, if you wish to read what others have said about it, you can head over to Amazon and check out the reviews for yourself.
So there we have it. Our top 10 list.
The Dyson V8 is way ahead in terms of overall quality, and is also the best cordless vacuum cleaner for pet hair. It is the high-end model, and if you have the means, you should definitely buy it.
But other vacs are enough also. You don’t need the most luxurious item on the market, because you can still get other quality products, for a lot cheaper. Having said that, all of these cordless vacuums are fantastic. In here, there is the perfect one for any home.
